Get your Shopify Store found in the Search Engines

Shopify is a fantastic Content Management System (CMS) used to build online stores. As with most ecommerce platforms, it has its own positives and negatives. It allows businesses to open an online store and start selling quickly and at a relatively low cost in comparison to other platforms such as Magento.

I have worked as a Shopify SEO consultant for several years now as part of a Shopify Partner agency. I have extensive knowledge of the Shopify platform and have produced great results across many different business sectors, both business-to-business and direct to the consumer.

Shopify and SEO

While Shopify allows you to sell online relatively quickly, there are many SEO quirks to be aware of. These are often down to the individual theme that you choose, but there are also some platform-specific restrictions, such as not being allowed to create your own SEO-friendly URL structure.

Despite this, Shopify can be optimised well. There are many stores online that use Shopify and generate huge amounts of traffic from the Search Engines. Some of the biggest brands using Shopify include Gymshark, Heinz and the BBC, so if you’re using this platform, you’re in good company.

How Ecommerce SEO is Different

Ecommerce SEO comes with its own set of challenges for ranking well in the Search Engines. As well as presenting a unique set of technical SEO challenges, you must also optimise for different steps in the buying journey. Portraying the authoritativeness of your brand and providing excellent customer service are both imperative for ecommerce SEO success. Luckily, Shopify gives you the tools do this.

Should I Use a Shopify SEO App?

There are plenty of Shopify SEO Apps out there, but simply installing and using one doesn’t mean that your ecommerce website is suddenly optimised. It is all dependent on which app you use, which theme you have, and how they integrate with one another.

I’ve seen Shopify stores with multiple title tags on one page, broken schema and all sorts of other on-page issues, just because an SEO app has been installed.

It’s usually best to let the theme do the SEO heavy lifting, and have one less app loading external scripts, to maintain a fast loading website. Therefore, an initial technical sweep usually requires the help of a Shopify developer to build in some structural changes to the theme.

Frequently Asked Questions

This depends on many things such as: your Shopify theme and technical debt, your product range, your niche, your competition, and more. I'm usually on the cheaper end of good SEO.
If you're only just starting your ecommerce journey, I suggest in investing in a couple of hours of consultancy, so you can be pointed in the right direction. There are some things that you can do to encourage organic traffic.
Results depend on the website itself and its technical debt, niche and competition. Google's official stance is 4-12 months. From my experience, low competition keywords take around 4-6 months to reach page 1, with more competitive keywords a bit longer. Every market niche is different, every single keyword target is different. I always recommend to commit to a minimum of 6 months.
I don't lock anyone into any long contracts, but I do recommend a minimum of 6 months. From there, you'll see results and we can discuss the ROI. A high percentage of my clients stay on board. Contracts are rolling monthly, and you need to give just 30 days notice (as I plan ahead) if you wish to cancel.
I like to work with businesses that are committed to SEO and are responsive, this will just help get better results from the campaign. Let's talk to see if we're a good fit.

I won't ever work with direct competitors, so for example, I won't work with 2 Shopify stores selling upholstered dining chairs that are competing for the same keyword targets.

I won't work in certain niches, such as gambling, just because there are better people out there that can help you and a deep knowledge of the niche is required. But most niches, I'm good with.

The first step is getting in touch for a chat about your business and goals, so let's talk - it's very likely I can help you.
Yes - I offer audits, SEO consultation and link building services. I also offer penalty recovery services, though these often take a long time, so it ultimately depends on my availability.
