What is Link Building?

Link building is simply the process of gaining links back to your website from other websites. In terms of SEO, links are a bit like currency on the internet – the more quality backlinks that your website has, the more authority your website has and therefore the ability to rank higher for certain keywords in your chosen niche/industry.

The quality bit is the important bit – you are definitely looking for quality over quantity, but also some diversity. Link building is actually quite technical, as you don’t want to have lots of low quality links pointing to your website that can possibly result in a penalty from Google. If you do this, your website will be able to rank well in your specific niche, and when you publish new content, you can also get indexed and ranked quite quickly.

Is Link Building White Hat or Black Hat?

According to Google, pretty much anything you do to try and “game” the search engine rankings is considered black hat. The white hat and black hat debate is an old one, and a bit of a stupid one. You should instead consider SEO methods as either “they work or they don’t work”. Assuming your website content and technical implementation are on-point, building backlinks to your website really moves the needle.

How Many Links Do I Need?

This answer depends on your website, your domain authority that you already have, and your competition for a certain keyword. Each keyword/topic will be different – so for example, if you’re looking to rank for “ladies shoes”, you may need 20 to rank on page one for that term, but if you also want to rank for “mens shoes”, you may need another 30 to this section of your website. Each Search Engine Results Page (SERP) will have different competition that you need to benchmark against.

You also can’t just go and hammer lots of keyword-rich links to a single page all at once, you must work to these targets over time, so your backlink portfolio appears natural.
